Mayim Bialik is a Highly Sensitive Person. Did You Know?
Do you know that feeling you get when you find out someone you admire is more like you than you thought? We had that feeling when we found out that Mayim Bialik is a highly sensitive person.
And if you don’t know who Mayim Bialik is, then you didn’t watch The Big Bang Theory because she played Amy on that show. But don’t fret, we’ll be telling you more about her shortly.
First,
Below is a video of Mayim on The Kelly Clarkson Show, talking about being highly sensitive.
And as you click on the video to watch, please note that being a highly sensitive person is not an illness. Mayim refers to it as a diagnosis (as if to mean an illness), but research has repeatedly shown it’s a personality trait, not an illness.
So please take note of this distinction as you watch.
And now that you’ve heard it directly from Mayim, let’s talk a little bit about her.
Who is Mayim Bialik?
Mayim Bialik is many things. She’s an Author, Actor (or Actress, if you will), Neuroscientist, Podcaster, Producer, Game Show Host, and a Certified Lactation Education Counselor.
No kidding!
We didn’t even know about that last one until we went snooping on her website.
As an actor, she’s best known for her lead role in Blossom, and as Amy Farrah Fowler in The Big Bang Theory. It’s during her role as Amy that we learnt of Mayim and fell in love with her. At the time, she was posting educational (and fun) YouTube videos on her channel and we couldn’t get enough.
As an Author, Mayim has written these books:
- Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular
- Boying Up: How to Be Brave, Bold and Brilliant
- Mayim’s Vegan Table: More than 100 Great-Tasting and Healthy Recipes from My Family to Yours
And as a Podcaster, she’s been hosting a mental health podcast called Mayim’s Breakdown since January, 2021. On the podcast, she breaks down mental health topics so you don’t have to, and brings on amazing guests to share their mental health stories.
You can go here to learn more about her podcast. Which, by the way, is also available on YouTube as a video.
Mayim also added being a TV Game Show host to the list of things she does. This is after guest-hosting Jeopardy! for two weeks in 2021, and going on to become a co-host of the show with Ken Jennings.
Why Does it Matter that Mayim Bialik is an HSP?
To someone who doesn’t know Mayim, the fact that she’s a highly sensitive person may seem of less importance. But to someone who does know her, Mayim is another addition to the many awesome people who happen to be highly sensitive. And that in itself is a great deal.
Because you see;
When you’re a highly sensitive person and everyone around you seems to handle life better than you, it gets lonely. You feel alone, abnormal, and like there’s something wrong with you that needs to be fixed.
And there’s that other feeling that you’ll never be great as all the people you admire.
Then out of nowhere, one of the people you admire and look up to says they’re like you. That they’re highly sensitive and didn’t even know about it. All they knew is that people have always called them “too sensitive” or “hypersensitive”.
And you no longer feel alone anymore.
Instead, you feel empowered. You feel as if the world became much smaller and you’re seating with Mayim talking about your highly sensitive trait. And just like that, something inside of you changes forever.
You no longer feel alone. You no longer feel abnormal. And you no longer feel as if you need to be fixed.
That feeling is the reason why it matters that Mayim Bialik is a highly sensitive person.
In the End
If you’re highly sensitive and love to draw inspiration and motivation from public figures, let Mayim Bialik become your inspiration. Or even Kelly Clarkson.
She didn’t say it out loud with words, but if you watch closely in the video above, you can see her gesturing to herself in admittance that she too is highly sensitive.
Or even go ahead and create a list of famous people who are (or were) highly sensitive. Like Martin Luther King Jr, Nicole Kidman, Lorde, and Albert Einstein.
